Gus Ups The Gas At Claygate Five

Claygate Five 2016Gus Upton certainly put his foot on the gas at the recent Claygate Country Five (Sunday 10 July) as he defeated a useful field of 350 runners in 26min40sec, the fastest seen on this course this century. Joanna Shillington (32:13) was the women’s winner and Councillor Alex Coombes presented the trophies.

Race director, Elisa Newson Smith, described the running conditions as 'perfect' before a minute’s silence was observed on the start line in memory of the long term race sponsor, Andrew Willis of AW Law.

Gus Upton (Belgrave Harriers), who has run 5000m in 15:31.92, enjoyed a classic gun to tape win and was joined on the podium by M40 Julian Manning (Denmead Striders, 27:43) and M40 Matt Atkins (Kingston and Polytechnic Harriers, 27:54).

Joanna Shillington (W40, Thames Hare and Hounds) said: “It was the fourth time I tried this race and the first time I won, so I’m delighted! The event was excellent and really good fun and I was very happy to take part.” Joanna’s closest challenge came from W35 Helen Maguire (Epsom and Ewell Harriers, 34:51) and W45 Jay Hadfield (Elmbridge Road Runners, 35:09).

The Claygate Country Five is held on a multi-terrain course through beautiful countryside around Arbrook Common, near Esher. There were runners of all ages and abilities soaking up the atmosphere as they were cheered along the course. The event is organised by the Claygate Flower and Village Show Society.
