If only he had put a bit more effort in! Our photo star is Alex Callaby, who strained every sinew to finish 2,277th in last year's Mercer Surrey Half Marathon (2:00:04 chip time). We don't know if Alex is back to smash through the two hour barrier this year but if you want to sample the special atmosphere of this race you need to deploy some fast twitch fibres yourself and enter NOW.
Time is running out to enter Surrey’s multi-award winning half marathon, taking place for a fifth year at Woking Leisure Centre on 11 March 2018. The event always sells out in February so runners are urged to sign up by 14 February to guarantee a place and receive their race number in the post. Late entry ticket pricing starts after this date, with numbers issued on the day.
Surrey's largest half marathon has been awarded gold for race management by the British Association of Road Races. The fast, flat course through glorious countryside surrounding Woking and Guildford has yielded a course record of 1:02:42. Last year's champions were Andrius Jaksevicius (Belgrave Harriers, 1:09:50) and Helena Eastham (Ravens, 1:22:24).
With a choice of half marathon or 5k, free training plans and sessions for entrants this is an achievable event for even the newest runners. If you’d rather run with someone else why not get the whole office involved? Run as a team with work colleagues by entering the Morrisons Solicitors Corporate Challenge.
Those who have taken part before will enjoy new additions to the event including professional warm up; new vendors (including a juice bar and biscuit bus); more live music along the route (one band is both running and performing) and finish line treats like large medals, head wraps and a free yoga session or sports massage in the leisure centre.
Macmillan Cancer Support (national charity partner), Harrison’s Fund (local charity partner) and Woking Sam Beare are a few of the charities that benefit from the £400,000 raised annually by Mercer Surrey Half runners. Everyone will be entertained by activities in the Event Village including video streaming on a giant TV screen, live music, charity stalls, shops and cafes. The kids can also enjoy the half marathon experience by taking part in their own 2k race.
Surrey Half Marathon is sponsored by title partner Mercer, Morrisons Solicitors, GlucoRX, Fitstuff, Salming, Mercedes and Synergy Physiotherapy. For further information and entry details visit the Mercer Surrey Half Marathon website here
