Manchester Milestone For Patrick Barden

Patrick Barden finishes Manchester Half Marathon

Charity fundraiser Patrick Barden has overcome huge personal challenges to raise £27,000 for his chosen cause, Step and Learn, following his completion of Manchester Half Marathon. The 24-year-old from Kent has not let cerebral palsy stop him from achieving his ambitions resulting in national recognition through the Mirror’s Pride of Britain Awards.

Patrick was a regional finalist for Pride of Britain Awards having been nominated by Rod Black, chairman of Step and Learn, following numerous daredevil fundraising efforts, including a parachute jump and completing Virgin Money London Marathon.

Last month he took on Manchester Half Marathon and was present for the glamorous awards ceremony at Grosvenor House in London.

Pride of Britain Awards was broadcast on ITV on Tuesday night (7 November) and although he did not come first in the Fundraiser of the Year category, local hero Patrick still feels like a winner having realised a lifelong wish to run Manchester Half Marathon despite the onerous physical challenges he faces.

As a Manchester United fan and qualified soccer coach, Patrick was thrilled to walk past the 75,000 capacity ‘Theatre of Dreams’ stadium at Old Trafford on his way to the finish along with all the other runners at Emirates Old Trafford, home of Lancashire Cricket Club.

Patrick completed the 13.1 Manchester course over three days and timed his finish to coincide with the arrival of the masses. “I have to break it up like this because of my muscles,” says Patrick. “They gradually begin to seize up during prolonged exercise to a point where they don’t move and it becomes very hard to walk. Doing it in one day is too ambitious, even for me!”

Gus Karagiannis, Business Development Manager with Manchester Half Marathon organiser Xtra Mile Events, said: “Seeing Patrick complete Manchester Half Marathon was one of the most inspirational and emotional moments in the history of the race. I congratulate him as well as all the winners and finalists of the Mirror’s Pride of Britain Awards.”

Patrick will be continuing fundraising for ‘Step and Learn’ throughout more challenges in the future but you can donate for his Manchester Half Marathon achievement through this link or support Patrick on Twitter using the hashtag #SupportPatricksFinish
