A runABC reader has taken inspiration from one of our articles to set a new record at Edinburgh Marathon Festival. Mike Metcalfe read the ‘Steve Goes 4 It’ article about Steve Bonthrone completing all four races at the Edinburgh event and decided to try it himself.
He explains: “I ran all four races in 2015, but wanted to go back this year and do it again in the fastest time. My partner Hayley decided to come support me. We are both members of Warrington Running Club and Hayley is a runner as well so she decided to do three of the races… as you do. I ran London Marathon and a few other races to get miles in the legs leading up to Edinburgh as well as running at club nights.
“The hardest thing with Edinburgh is getting to the start of the full marathon in time. The half starts at 8am and the full starts at 10am but the half finishes 7 miles away from the start of the Marathon and due to road closures the journey can't be done in time in a car so it means I had to run a sub 1:30 half and then use a motorbike taxi I booked to wait at the half marathon finish.
“I finished the half in a time of 1:24:07 and jumped straight on the bike. As we raced across the city, I was nervous, thinking I now had another 26.2 miles to run and as fast as I could. As we pulled up I had a big sigh of relief, as well as fear, but I was off and running. As each mile went on, it got harder and harder physically and mentally but I dug in and finished the marathon in a time of 3:31:37. This gave me a combined total of 5:56:44 – the fastest time of all four races! And to think it all started from reading a article in runABC…”
