Distance running aficionados have two mouth-watering weekends to look forward to in 2012 following the release of the competition schedule for the London Olympic Games. On the opening day of the athletics programme on Friday, August 3, the women's 10,000m final takes place where Aldershot's Charlotte Purdue and Teddington-based Jo Pavey could contend.
The following day sees the men's 10,000m final where London-based European gold and silver medallists Mo Farah and Chris Thompson are likely Team GB entrants. On Sunday, August 5, the nation will have their tissues close to hand as Paula Radcliffe makes her third attempt to win the Olympic marathon. Harrow's Mara Yamauchi is another British possibility.
The following weekend promising to be just as memorable with the women's and men's 5000m finals on Friday, August 10 and Saturday, August 11 where Aldershot's Steph Twell and Farah could be among the GB hopes. The final event of the Olympics will be the men's marathon on Sunday, August 12 where Scotland's Andrew Lemoncello could be GB's leading light.
