Matt Looks Sharp Taking Victory

Victory 5 logoThree men ducked under 24 minutes as 700 runners helped City of Portsmouth AC celebrate the 70th staging of the ever popular Victory 5 mile road race on Sunday (4 December).

Matt Sharp (Enfield & Haringey) was third in the Great South Run 10 mile race in 48:48 in October and returned to the maritime city to take victory in the Victory 5 (23:42). Phil Wicks (Belgrave Harriers, 23:49) was only seven seconds in arrears and the podium was completed by Alex Tueten (23:58) of the host club.

Almost 90 athletes were operating at sub-6-minute pace for the single-lap course along Stamshaw Promenade and Lakeside, including the first three women. Emily Wicks (Aldershot, 27:56) went one better than her husband to win the women’s trophy from Jennifer Elkins (Southampton, 28:39) and Rebecca Lord (Stubbington Green, 29:39).

Last year's race winners were Scott Overall (Blackheath, 23:59) and Bryony Proctor (Aldershot, 28:44) and there were 654 finishers in 1:13:30. This year’s field of 691 was through the finish line at Mountbatten Stadium in 1:20:03 and Lordshill Road Runners’ Tim Withers and Kelly Kilpin shared halfway finisher times of 38:42.

Unusually these days there were less than 100 unattached runners competing in this historic club race but there were strong representations from local groups like Gosport Road Runners (30 finishers), Victory AC (36) and Portsmouth Joggers (38).
