Donington Park, renowned for its fierce motor cycling and Superbike racing and lively music, turned out to be a more than suitable venue for this Saturday’s (27 February) English National Cross Country Championships as the fastest runners from across the country battled it out for the title to a mass of vocal supporters.
It turned out to be a double – well triple, if we include their team victory too – for Aldershot Farnham & District as Jonathan Hay and Lily Partridge led their respective fields home.
Hay, leading for the majority of the race, faced a late challenge from Adam Hickey yet held on to his lead to finish in 42:09, with the Southend runner seven seconds behind (42:16), and Morpeth’s Nicholas Swinburd in third (42:53). The Aldershot athlete later tweeted: ‘Certainly made that tough for myself but great to win my first senior National xc title & a great battle at the end.’
In the women’s competition, Lily Partridge successfully defended her title with victory in 30:35, followed by Leeds City’s Claire Duck (30:45) and Stoke AC’s Katie Holt. An impressive total of 739 runners complete the senior female race.
