Andy Vernon (31) of Aldershot, Farnham and District AC started the New Year in spectacular fashion as he won the 38th annual New York Road Runners Midnight Run in Central Park. Vernon dominated the race as fireworks exploded overhead to win comfortably in cold conditions in 18:27 for the undulating four mile course.
Vernon followed the early pace set by last year's champion Daniel Winn (Boston AA) before making the decisive move in the uphill third mile on the west side of the famous park. Winn (18:49) held on for second from Louis Serafini (USA, 18:56).
Delighted with his new year form Vernon said: "The race went off pretty hard and I was a little bit back, maybe fourth for the first mile or so. Going through the second mile it turns left and you start going up that hill. That's when I caught the leader and pushed on from there".
Vernon also posted on Twitter: "Started the 2017 campaign with a strong run! Thanks to @nyrr for giving me the opportunity to race this great event".
The women's race was won by defending champion Sarah Pagano (Boston, 21:06). British Olympian, Hannah England (Oxford City, 23:09), continued her rehabilitation from a foot injury in sixth place.
