Fish First At Birchwood 10K

Birchwood 10K, with thanks to Brian Tuohey PhotographyThe Birchwood 10K lived up to its reputation as being one of the north-west’s most popular events with 900 runners turning out for Sunday’s event. There was a series of impressive times at the front of the field, with Blackburn Harriers’ Ben Fish taking top spot in 31:26.

The race, organised by Spectrum Striders and one of Cheshire’s top road races, saw runners tackle a predominantly flat course along roads and tarmac footpaths in Birchwood and Croft.

Fish, who took first place in last month’s Offerton 10K, finished 14 seconds ahead of Michael Aspinall (31:40) in second. Salford Harriers’ Tarus Elly, winner of the 2013 event, rounded off the top trio with a time of 32:28.

In the women’s field, Kelly Crickmore (35:28) finished more than two minutes ahead of Diane McVey (37:48), with Sarah Murphy in third position (38:14). Fleur Evans was the mid-point runner in 50:25, while the last competitor came home in 1:26:08.
