James Westlake of Crawley AC defeated a healthy field of 1,603 finishers in the 23rd Bognor Prom 10K on Sunday morning (21 May). Showing full recovery from his personal best in Virgin Money London Marathon last month (57th, 2:26:33), he took the Bognor title in 31:47.
Westlake's Progress In Bognor
Westlake had taken bronze in the Sussex 5000m (15:23:28) the previous weekend and carried that speed into the popular Bognor race, promoted by Rotary Club of Bognor Hotham since 1995. The winner certainly has made progress since making his debut in this event in 2011 (1,257th in 64:59).
The prize winners' podium was completed by Matt Bradford (Lewes, 32:30) and James Baker (Chichester, 33:05). Finishing in the top ten and leading the masters were M40 Graham Godden (Brighton, 33:32) and M50 Ronnie Adams (Portsmouth, 34:08).
While there was plenty of experience at the front of the men's race, Johanna Spannagl (Horsham Blue Star, 38:50) was racing 10k for just the second time, taking 63 seconds from her 2010 result at Dunsfold (39:53). Spannagl had warmed up with victory in the Run Wisborough 5k (19:05) the previous weekend.
Shona Crombie-Hicks (W45 Cheltenham Harriers, 39:34) was second from Chichester Runners' Lucy Thraves (41:00) third and W40 master Kari Mack (Tone Zone, 41:31) fourth.
The final finishers were home inside two hours and Olivia Shaw ran exactly 60:00, wearing race number 1603 – the actual number of finishers!
