As Myanmar continues its transition from military rule to democracy, Sports Tours International is giving UK runners the opportunity to experience the south east Asian country for themselves. The travel specialists are offering various packages for this year’s Bagan Temple Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K on 26 November.
All three races start and finish at the 800-year-old Htlominlo Temple. Runners will cross the plains on dirt tracks towards the ancient city of Old Bagan, home to more than 2000 temples, stupas and pagodas, with thousands more lying in ruins. Once they reach Dhammayazika Pagoda, the half marathon and marathon runners will diverge.
Marathon runners will carry on towards New Bagan through a number of Burmese villages. Half marathon runners will turn onto an asphalt route to the village of West Pwazaw, before turning back onto the marathon route to the finish. After West Pwazaw village, both routes will merge back together, to be rewarded by a temple-speckled vista for the final run along a dirt trail back towards Htilominlo Temple.
10k runners follow the same route as the marathon and half marathon until they reach Old Bagan, where they turn back and towards the finish at Htilominlo Temple.
