Invicta East Kent AC has just opened entries for the immensely popular SsanYong Canterbury 10 Mile Road Race due to be held on Sunday 27 January, 2019. The past three years have seen record numbers and the host club's Abel Tsegay is on for his fifth consecutive victory.
Korean car manufacturer SsanYong is lead sponsor for a second successive year and the race supports the vital work of Pilgrim's Hospices, who received a cheque for £1,500 from the race earlier this year.
A record entry of 1,500 with around 1,400 finishers in January 2017 makes this the largest race at the traditional 10 mile distance in Kent. Race HQ is the spacious and accommodating Christ Church University Sports Centre and despite a few testing undulations the race can produce fast times, even in the often severe weather conditions.
This year's top three men all set whopping personal bests. Abel Tsegay (51:13) was followed by Tewelde Menges (Medway & Maidstone, 53:16) and local Canterbury Harrier Peter Hogben (54:11). Meanwhile, there was a stunning result for Tonbridge AC's Nicole Taylor (58:34 PB) who set the fastest women's time since 2005 to win from W50 master Tina Oldershaw (Tonbridge, 63:34) and W40 Renata McDonnell (Deal Tri, 64:17 PB).
Tonbridge AC won both men's and women's team prizes as 23 runners finished inside the hour; 150 broke 70 minutes and 755 were under 90 minutes. The final finisher (1,390th) stood the timekeepers down at 2:37:31 on a morning that started cold and dry but ended with snow showers and a freezing wind.
Race director Glenn Mousley said: “The race ran smoothly with some excellent performances and many personal bests. Our team of helpers put in a lot of work to make the race as good as it was and should be thanked. However, we should also applaud the runners who turned out in such large numbers to help make the race a success and the various sponsors' support, without whom the race could not take place. We will be back in 2019.”
Indeed they are back and you could be among them but you will need to be quick as this race fills up early. Visit the SsanYong Canterbury 10 website
