Crawl Of Duty

Kenyan marathon runner, Hyvon Ngetich, put on a powerful display of sheer determination as she crawled her way to the finish line at Austin Marathon on Sunday (15 February). Astonishingly, despite collapsing at with just two tenths of a mile left, she still managed to achieve a third place finish with a time of 3:04:02.

The 29-year-old had been leading the women's field before collapsing. However, she refused to accept the race marshals' offer of a wheelchair and instead crawled her way to the finish line.

Hyvon claims to have no memory of the ordeal, saying: "For the last two kilometres, I don't remember. Finish line, I have no idea."

Her thoughts on crossing the finish line were: "Oh God, thank you. I crossed in third place."

Race director John Conley told her "You ran the bravest race, and crawled the bravest crawl I have ever seen in my life. You have earned much honour."

On why she decided to keep running, Hyvon explained: "In running, you always have to keep going. You need to die running."
