Virgin Money London Marathon, just like the famous blue line the runners follow, may already be a fading memory and all sensible marathoners will still be in recovery mode but, for those of us who were mere armchair athletes, the Bank Holiday weekend opens the floodgates for competition again in the South.
Windy Weekend Ahead In The South
With three days available and the weather set to improve steadily, we can look forward to races from 5k to 26.2 miles in our region. A quick glance at the runABC South race listings, brought to you in association with Sports Tours International, shows that the favoured distance this weekend is the hugely popular and achievable 10k.
Runners can test their mettle over 10k on Saturday (29 April) at Olympic Park, London where there are also 5k, 10-mile and half marathon options. On Sunday there are 10k events at Clapham Common, Leatherhead, Medmenham, Kings Lynn, Fordingbridge and Bristol. May Day Bank Holiday brings more 10k races at Bromley, Burgess Hill, Watford, Whitstable, West Ham and Chalgrove – phew!
If half marathon is more to your taste then the Virgin Sport Hackney Half, Ranelagh Harriers' Richmond Half or Tamar Trotters' Saltash Half on Sunday could fit the bill. Ashford and District AC offer both half and full marathon from Charing School, Kent and the full experience is available at Dorset Doddlers' North Dorset Village Marathon from Sturminster Newton High School.
As always, runABC wishes every runner a safe and enjoyable race and may the only wind you experience be a following one!
