Course Upgrade At Elmbridge 10K

eLMBRIDGE 10K NEW COURSE

The 2018 Elmbridge 10K on Sunday (22 July) used a modified course that started and finished on the new athletics track at the Xcel Leisure Centre in Walton-on-Thames. Race winners Scott Overall and Eleanor Harrison were among the 589 finishers who enjoyed the impressive new venue and attractive route on the River Thames path.

The course record holder (30:37) and defending champion Phil Wicks (Belgrave Harriers) was absent, so was unable to add to his victories in 2005, 2013, 2016 and 2017. A race with Scott Overall (Blackheath & Bromley Harriers, 30:53) would have been a classic but Kevin Quinn (South London Harriers, 31:19) kept the former UK 5000m champion and London Olympic marathon representative honest to the line.

Third place went to the improving Ollie Garrod (Epsom & Ewell Harriers, 31:58), who has a number of strings to his bow as a top class runner, busy administrator and holder of the third most first finishes in parkruns globally (207)!

Eleanor Harrison (Guildford & Godalming, 37:27) had a more comfortable win in the women's race over Collingwood AC pair, W35 Lisa Rooney (39:13) and W45 Debbie Jackson (39:40).

Tom Griffiths (5th, 32:47) led Guildford & Godalming to the men's team awards and the women's race winner set up a similar success for her team.

This was the 35th year of this highly regarded, traditional 10k race that saw all 589 finishers home in 1:36:45. There were 340 runners under 50 minutes and 500 inside an hour. The mid point runner was Elmbridge Road Runners' very own Merilyn Davis (48:25).
