Entries Surge For Junior Races

Action from boys' race at 2013 event

Over 1,000 youngsters have already signed up for the junior event that acts as curtain raiser for Brighton Marathon. There are still six months to go until the 2014 ICONIQ Shlurp! Mini Mile races but entries are more than double what they were for the 2013 races at the same time last year.

Instead of taking place on the same day as Brighton Marathon as in recent years, this year's event will take place the previous day of Saturday 5 April.

"We are delighted by the response we have received since opening entries at the beginning of October," said organiser Holly Freeman. "Holding the races on the Saturday means attracting a lot of new runners who will be coming from further afield. The more youngsters that come and experience the thrill of being involved in Brighton Marathon weekend, the more we are doing to encourage an active lifestyle."

In a change to previous years the races will be held in Preston Park, the first race getting under way at 11am. Organisers, Grounded Events, are aiming to hit the 3,000 mark after attracting 2,000 to compete in 2013.

The race is open to anyone between the ages of seven and 17. All competitors receive a T-shirt, kit bag and a medal on finishing. The Mini Mile Races are partnered with Barnardo's, a charity supported by Shlurp! To enter visit the website.
