Race director, Ray Johnson is watching the weather forecast anxiously ahead of next weekend's (Sunday, 29 May) fifth Folkestone Coastal 10K. Last year the heavens opened and there were monsoon conditions for competitors and officials to cope with. Surely, lightning cannot strike twice in the same place?
Advance entries are nearing 500 and there is an age range from 15 to 80 among the competitors already confirmed. The race limit is 1,000 and the course is flat and fast, out towards Hythe and back on the traffic-free promenade, with great coastal views.
Last year’s winners were the course record holders Paul Whittaker (Southend, 32:08) and W45 Maria Heslop (Paddock Wood, 38:47), who ran 36:49 in 2013. The final finisher was home inside 90 minutes despite the awful weather conditions.
Local charities benefit from the race and there is easy parking; a medal and goody bag; chip timing; massage facilities and a technical race T-shirt will also be available.
Ray Johnson said: “The race, which is sponsored by Independent Insurance Services and Insure Green, will set off from the former Rotunda Site on the Folkestone seafront (CT20 1PX) and late registrations will be accepted. The fee on the day will be £20.00 but advance entries are still available online. Bring the family because there is plenty to see and do and there is a kid’s 500m dash at 9:30am for just £2 entry”.
