Ray Johnson is not your typical race director. He is not only preparing for his 17th London Marathon in April but also juggling business life, charity work as a keen local Rotarian and organising the sixth Folkestone Coastal 10K on Sunday, 28 May. Ray's company, Independent Insurance Services & Insure Green, will again be sponsoring the race and about the only thing he is not directly responsible for is race day weather!
Ray Of Sunshine At Folkestone 10K
Last year there were 650 entries for this increasingly popular race held on the flat and fast Folkestone promenade. The winners were Robert Latala (Ashford Roadrunners, 33:09) and former Australian Olympian, Natalie Harvey (South London Harriers, 37:31) as 375 broke the hour and 525 finished in 1:40:15.
Despite excellent conditions the course records held by Paul Whittaker (Southend, 32:08) and three-time winner, Maria Heslop (Paddock Wood, 36:49) remained intact. Folkestone Running Club won both men's and women's team awards.
The race is a successful fundraiser for local charities including Rotary Club Folkestone and Gurkha Memorial Fund and more than £200,000 has been distributed to good causes. After the 2016 race Ray Johnson said: “I’m delighted that there was a terrific turnout for this year’s race with over 650 entrants and good support along the whole course, with the crowds and marshals creating a great atmosphere. Unlike last year we enjoyed fair weather conditions for our fifth Folkestone Coastal 10K. The children’s race was well-attended with great enthusiasm from these athletes of the future”.
Race features include finishers medals, spot prizes, enthusiastic marshals and £100 winner's awards and entry fees are as low as £14 before 18 May 2017 (£20 thereafter). There is a children's race for under-15s held half an hour before the main event, with entries taken on the day.
