Children Running Campaign Draws Thousands

Lymington event

The UK’s largest mass participation running campaign for children has hosted its final event this year with over 45,000 having taken part. Over 200 children took part in the final INEOS GO Run For Fun event for 2014 on Friday 28 November in Lymington in the New Forest. Participants were cheered on by GO Run For Fun ambassador Valeria Sesto and crowds of supporters.

The festive run was part of the Christmas lights switch-on for the market town and followed on from a run in Falkirk in Scotland which also marked a special milestone in the campaign, as the 45,000th participant crossed the finish line. So far in the ongoing campaign, there have now been 106 events with 45,728 runners since the launch of the campaign.

Lymington-based ultra runner, Valeria, joined the children for the mass warm-up and sounded the horn to announce the start of the one-mile challenge. Valeria, originally from Argentina, came 7th in the 50k World Ultra Marathon Championships in Doha, Qatar on the 31 October.

Events have now been staged from Belfast to Sheffield, Ipswich to Falkirk. The campaign aims to get 100,000 children running by 2016 - making it the biggest children’s running initiative in the world. The GO Run For Fun series is the idea of Jim Ratcliffe, owner of INEOS, one of the UK’s largest manufacturing companies, who announced a £1.5m donation spread over three years to establish a new charitable foundation to encourage children to run for fun.

Jim said: “I’m passionate about getting as many children running as possible as early as possible. The idea is simple – to get children out of the house having fun. It is not rocket science. Running is the basis of so many great sports. If our children can catch the running bug early, they’re more likely to stick to it, and this can only lead to them having more active and healthier lifestyles in the future.”
