There were 823 finishers in the Hog’s Back Road Race at the Loseley Estate near Guildford on Sunday (4 December), with pride of place going to winners John Sanderson (Guildford & Godalming) and Georgie Bruinvels (Aldershot, Farnham & District). This traditional club favourite 11.7km race continues to attract large fields and quality athletes in its 57th year of competition.
The top three men (pictured) ducked under 40-minutes despite the testing climb of The Mount and the gravelled surface through Loseley Park Estate in Compton on the North Downs, with its 16th century stone-built manor house. Loseley itself is a little older as it first made an appearance in the 1086 Doomsday Book.
John Sanderson (37:14) was comfortably clear of Joe Morwood (Aldershot, 38:39) and Ollie Garrod (Epson & Ewell Harriers, 39:47). runABC preview star, Ben Evans (Guildford, 41:15), was seventh overall after a fine run without the extra weight of the antediluvian outfit he is renowned for as the Guinness World Record holder for running the fastest marathon while dressed as a dinosaur!
Georgie Bruinvels (42:15) – wearing bib 75 at the start – was even more dominant in the womens' races as befits a GB international. Jo Billings (RG Active, 47:38) and Wendy Roberts (Guildford, 47:47) chased the Aldershot athlete in vain. Bruinvels’ pace was 3:37 per km and the final finisher (1:33:44) managed a fraction over 8:00 per km.
The race was organised by AAT Events on behalf of Guildford and Godalming AC and the main sponsors are Wilkins Kennedy LLP, Hog’s Back Brewery, Fitstuff and Guildford Sports Clinic.
