The remarkable success of Kent Running Project in 2012 was recognised last week with the annual England Athletics Run England Project of the Year National Award. The Kent initiative has seen the qualification (Leadership in Running Fitness) of 40 leaders and the creation of 29 new groups, with more in the pipeline.

The catalysts for the project's achievement have been strategic investment by Sport England and the passion and enthusiasm of Kent Running coordinator Lucy Tomlinson. The project started in January with a Leader recruitment campaign, promotion at local races and within clubs and community partners. This directly reached the enthusiastic runner, keen to encourage their local community to get running. The ethos of the project is about befriending and supporting the local leader and making them feel part of a wider programme.

Free social media training has been provided, as well as development days aimed to inspire leaders with best practises and new ideas. This approach has been well received. Sharron Harris, Group Leader of SouthEast Striders said, "Lucy has been fantastic, very supportive and always there to help."
