The final weekend of March sees the latest RunThrough promoted Lee Valley Velopark Series of races. The superb new medal design (pictured) illustrates the USP of the series – each event held on the last Saturday of the month offers five separate distances on the same one mile, floodlit Moto GP-style race circuit.
The chance to race any distance on the smooth tarmac of the 2012 Olympic venue is not to be passed lightly and the wide choice of events incorporating a mile, 5K, 10K, 10 miles and half marathon is pretty much unique in our experience.
There is even a free to enter children's mile to keep the youngsters occupied while the adult's races start with the longest event at 10:00am with a generous three hour time limit. The 10 mile is off at 9:15am; 5K at 9:45am; mile (and kid's mile) at 10:00am and finally the 10K at 10:15am. Entry fees range from £10 for the mile to £22 for half marathon and a race T-shirt can be added for a further £10.
Another innovative touch is that all finishers will appear on the RunThrough Rankings – a leaderboard displaying all finishing times on a searchable database that is divided annually and all time. The leading half marathon times on the Lee Valley Velopark course are held by Ben Fletcher (1:09:58) set in December 2017 and Sherri Shillingford (1:24:04) from March 2018.
Lee Valley VeloPark’s one mile circuit is the perfect course to test yourself over a new distance or to check your pacing with every mile chip timed for you to view after the race. As with all RunThrough events there will be water stations plus fruit and flapjacks at the finish but there is something special about the atmosphere at this extraordinary venue – scene of such exciting athletics and multi-sports just seven years ago.
