Known for its resident Wombles, Wimbledon Common will welcome some other eccentric creatures this weekend. A hearty gathering of ultra-runners are set to race through the night on 14-15 June as part of the Salomon London Enduro Run.
Commencing at 6pm on Saturday following the Summer Breeze Half Marathon earlier in the day, each athlete will cover a 9.75k loop to see who can clock up the most miles in 12 hours.
As well as individual runners, pairs and teams will be taking to the Common to test their stamina and staying power. They will also be raising money for official charity partners The Shooting Star and Chase Children’s Hospices and for their own charities.
Race organiser Richard Xerri welcomes supporters to come and cheer the athletes on: “Not only are we having an all-night endurance race, but we also have the Summer Breeze half marathon kicking off at 3pm. All the runners get a real kick from being clapped on, so please come down and show your support. It’s free and it’s fun.”
