Milton Keynes Marathon set for 5 May 2014 has sent out an early invitation to runners rejected for next year's London Marathon. The event billed as the 'Green marathon' is highlighting that the new city in Buckinghamshire was originally formed to help give new places for Londoners to live, now it is offering a new place for those to run the magic 26.2 miles and have the time of their lives.
The team at MK Marathon is keen to underline its green credentials with organisers having made a Pledge of Sustainability. Existing plans include:
- paperless registration
- collection and donation to charity of discarded clothing at the start
- supervised cycle parking bays and valet area
- car sharing scheme
- bicycle pace vehicles
- recycling bins at the start/finish area and recycling of plastic drinks bottles
Other highlights of MK Marathon for 2014 are an extended race programme that now includes full marathon, half marathon, corporate relay and Superhero fun run; and an event start and finish at stadiummk, state of the art home of MK Dons FC. Pete Winkelman, chair of the football club, said: "It will be great to have everyone's family and friends in the stadium at the end of the marathon to cheer them over the line."
Milton Keynes Marathon is unusual in that it takes place on a Monday taking advantage of the May Day bank holiday on the 5th of the month. The event is sponsored by lifestyle footwear specialist Skechers.
