Four time Olympic champion and 400m world record holder Michael Johnson has been confirmed as the official starter of this year’s Bloomberg Square Mile Relay on Thursday 4 September.
The Olympic legend and BBC Sport pundit will be joined by over 1,000 runners at Guildhall Yard in the heart of London’s financial district, all of whom will be hoping to claim the title of London’s fastest company at the eighth Bloomberg Square Mile Relay.
Undeniably one of the greatest sprinters in the world, and still 400m world record holder, Johnson will be on-hand at the event to motivate and inspire some of the City’s fastest runners before they take to the streets and iconic landmarks of London’s Square Mile. Each team, comprising of 10 runners, each running one mile each, will battle it out against each other to cross the finish line in the fastest time possible.
Speaking ahead of the Bloomberg Square Mile Relay, which has added Singapore and Hong Kong to its Global Series, Johnson commented: ‘I can’t wait to see London take its famous competitive streak out of the boardroom and onto the streets in such an iconic race.
“As an athlete I prepared for and thrived on extreme pressure, and the level of competition between some of London’s most high-profile companies in The Bloomberg Square Mile Relay is what makes this event so exhilarating and unique.’
Bloomberg has been a headline partner of the Bloomberg Square Mile Relay for the last eight years. Other official partners include Epson, Karrimor, Virgin Active and Sport magazine.
