Dame Kelly Holmes has joined Mole Valley Runners – for a run. The Athens Olympic 800m and 1500m champion has a packed diary of engagements but found time to share a training run with members of the Surrey based RunTogether group as part of her #JoinInJune initiative.
Our image shows Kelly back on track with some of the 116 active members of Mole Valley Runners at King George V playing fields, Effingham. Good to see an 'old school' grass track making a welcome appearance, a far cry from the all weather surfaces that Dame Kelly graced in her pomp.
Kelly had been sent numerous videos of Mole Valley Runners in action before agreeing to include them in her busy programme on 28 June, just hitting the #JoinInJune deadline. There were 27 RunTogether runners present, all of whom were, 'over the moon', to have this athletics legend join their regular Thursday morning run from Effingham to Polesden Lacey National Trust.
Run leader Debbie explained: “It was hilarious, lots of fun and helped to ease people's nerves. We headed off for an 8km to 9.5km run. Faster runners had to loop back, this meant Kelly too, to ensure she was able to chat to everyone en route. She gave runners lots of tips and advice but also boosted the confidence of everyone. It was truly amazing, a once in a lifetime event”.
Mole Valley Runners are one of more than 1,800 nationally registered RunTogether groups, totalling 70,000 active runners. The visit topped off a hugely successful month for Mole Valley Runners, who have become a mainstream affiliated club and secured a qualified running coach and three newly qualified run leaders to support their activities.
