Copson Wins Three In One At Northampton

Northampton Half Marathon start 2017

When you are an over-70 athlete it can be a good idea to conserve a bit of energy sometimes. Angela Copson found the perfect energy efficient formula by winning three half marathon first place awards in one race at Northampton on Sunday (3 September).

The fifth Northampton Half Marathon included the Northamptonshire County Championships and British Masters Championships, so local Rugby and Northampton AC member Angela Copson was perfectly positioned for a clean sweep of all three W70 awards. This was duly achieved in a UK over-70 best of 1:40:33, despite the testing course and windy conditions.

Championship status certainly added some quality to the sharp end of the race as 72 runners completed 13.1 miles inside 90 minutes. Northampton Half Marathon showcases the heritage of the market town's industrial past and the surrounding countryside. The race starts in the shadow of the imposing Victorian gothic Guildhall and loops around the town centre before heading towards the finish on the front lawn of historic Delapre Abbey, now open to the public for the first time in its 900-year history.

Overall winner and British Masters champion was Peter Tucker (M35 Blackheath & Bromley, 1:12:43) from local favourite and Northants county champion Phil Melling (M40 Rugby & Northampton, 1:12:50) and Chris Biddle (M35 Dartford Harriers, 1:14:32).

Eye catching masters' gold medal runs included M50 Chris Hollinshead (Cannock & Stafford, 1:17:34), M60 Paul Mingay (Tiptree, 1:21:49) and M70 Geoff Newton (Tadworth, 1:38:08).

The top three women were all W40 masters, with Kirstie Sharman (Bedford Harriers, 1:25:22) claiming the individual award and BMAF title from Newcastle Staffs members Michelle Buckle (1:29:10) and Lindsay Dixon (1:29:53). Apart from the aforementioned Copson, the most impressive higher age group result was achieved by W50 Catherine Ulliott (1:34:41).

There were 676 finishers in 3:49:45 and halfway in the field was marked by Carrie Oliver (W55 Winchester) in 1:57:09.
