More than 2,000 runners completed the Paddock Wood Half Marathon in Kent yesterday (8 April) with John Gilbert, of Kent AC, winning in a fast 1:05:18 and Lucy Reid (1:16:19) leading a Tonbridge trio to a clean sweep of the rostrum places.
John Gilbert is in fine fettle after annexing the Kent and Southern cross country titles in January and taking bronze in the English National cross country at Parliament Hill in February. His front running victory at Paddock Wood lopped more than 20 seconds off his previous best.
Among those chasing shadows on the flat and fast course through hop fields were runners-up Jonathan Cornish (Hercules Wimbledon, 1:08:16) and Tewelde Menges (Medway & Maidstone, 1:08:33 PB).
Lucy Reid (1:16:19) won the all Tonbridge battle at the front of the women's race from Nicole Taylor (1:17:18) and Maria Heslop (1:19:55). All three set whopping personal bests but most impressive was Heslop who ran the second fastest time ever recorded by a W50 master.
The Paddock Wood race is consistently fast and well supported. This year there were 2,061 finishers in 3:35:42 and Catherine Stewart (W55 Bexhill Runners) crossed the line in exactly two hours in 1,186th.
