Portsmouth’s Spinnaker Tower has launched the search for the fastest runner to conquer their 530 stairs. The race, to be held on Sunday 12 October, forms part of a World Federation of Great Tower series of stair runs. The series culminates in a grand finale at the Danube Tower in Vienna. Two runners – the top male and female competitor – from the Spinnaker Tower-thon will be flown to Vienna to take part, pitted against the other series’ winners.
Sarah Webb, general manager at Spinnaker Tower, commented: “We’re excited to stand alongside a series of fellow towers worldwide to offer this fantastic opportunity. The current record for running the stairs stands at under 3 minutes and I’m looking forward to seeing this time smashed as our runners challenge themselves to get their hands on the prize!”
The World Federation of Great Towers is an international association of 37 great monuments which include some of the most famous buildings in the world. The Spinnaker Tower is among prestigious company in hosting a tower stair run, with other members of the federation participating in the same series including the Empire State Building, Sydney Tower, Calgary Tower, and Prague’s TV Tower.
The Spinnaker Tower is open daily from 10.00am to 6.00pm (excluding Christmas Day). The Spinnaker Tower-thon is £25 to enter. Runners can sign up at the Chip Timing UK website.
