James Donaldson (Greenwich Tritons) was a popular local winner of a very well attended Christmas Greenwich Park 10K on Sunday morning (17 December). The 10k was supported by a 5k run that started five minutes before the main race.
Experienced race promoters RunThrough provided a well marshalled course, chip timing, baggage storage, water and a medal but could not control the grey skies that threatened rain during the morning. However, dull and drizzly weather did not dampen the enthusiasm of almost 700 starters across both events.
James Donaldson was soon running through the tail enders in the 5k run as he carved out a lead of 21 seconds to stop the timekeeper's watch at 37:04 in the men's 10k. Brendan Morris (Reading Roadrunners, 37:25) and unattached runners Glen Lewis (37:44) and Matt Fincham (37:55) were all within a minute of the leader.
Joanne Walby (W35, 37:45) enjoyed a four minute cushion in the women's 10k. There was more of a tussle for the remaining podium places as Amelie Karlsson (42:11), Elle Richmond (44:21) and Alice Newstead (44:40) fought for top three honours.
Overall there were 432 finishers in 1:23:34 and more than half the field completed the hilly three-lap course inside an hour.
Just over 200 runners preferred the shorter journey of 5k and the winners were Martyn Millard (New Eltham Joggers, 18:46) and Laura Hillyard (Colchester, 22:48). More than 50 runners finished inside 30 minutes and the whole field completed their pre-Christmas workout in an hour.
Fancy dress was a feature of this event and certainly put a smile on the faces of fellow competitors and supporters out on the course as our pictures show.
