Organisers of the ABP Southampton Half Marathon are putting out the welcome signs for runners that have missed out on the Virgin Money London Marathon, after ballot entrants discovered their fate this week.
“Every year the Virgin London Marathon is massively oversubscribed and thousands miss out on the chance to run in the capital,’’ said event director Chris Rees from Marafun UK.
“However we still have entries available for the first APB Southampton Half Marathon so runners can head south and put all of their training into practice and enjoy a great welcome from Southampton.’’
Already more than 2,000 people have signed up for the ABP Southampton Half Marathon or 10k races – both set to be run in the city on Sunday April 26 – the same day as the Virgin London Marathon.
“The event has already captured the interests of runners and we’re expecting to see an influx after the results of the Virgin London Marathon ballot are known from people still keen to run in April,’’ added Chris.
The ABP Southampton Half Marathon takes in all of the city’s key sites on a route which offers a mix of coastal, urban and green areas including the Bargate, Itchen Bridge before a grandstand finish in Guildhall Square.
Entry information is available at the event website.
