Charlie Butcher mastered The Fox Ultra on the anti-clockwise route used for the latest race promoted by award winning aat-events on Saturday 21 April. Butcher was first overall from more than 200 individual and relay entrants in this 60km circuit through the Surrey Hills.
With almost twice the entries from last year the four event card from Wilfred Noyce Centre, Godalming featured the main 60km ultra-marathon, run in partnership with ULTRA magazine. The Fox Ultra enjoyed glorious sunshine all day and with £3 beers from Kombi Keg it really was the place to be on a hot afternoon in Surrey on Saturday.
The route followed the Fox Way, established by local walker Richard Fox, in an anticlockwise direction through Shere, Clandon, Ripley, Worplesdon, Puttenham and Godalming. The course alternates annually, so you’ve not fully experienced The Fox until you’ve run it both ways!
The ultra winners were Charlie Butcher (4:44:19) and W45 Maryann Devally (Serpentine, 5:59:09). Fiona and Hannah Munro were the final finishers in 10:31:24. The Ultra Relay divided the course into three sections of 20km, 21km and 19km and the fastest trio were Russell Burton, Emma Burton and Luke Harrison (Air Product Flyers, 5:24:09).
It was ladies first in the 42km race as Rebecca Haywood (4:09:03) and Tim Darke (4:12:25) led 48 finishers in 6:56:20. The half marathon distance winners were Thomas Grimes (East London Runners, 1:32:58) and Daisy Jackson (Cool Cats, 2:06:00).
Event director Becky Hadley said: “The Fox is fast becoming a firm favourite in Guildford’s running calendar.”
Prizes from sponsors Salming were appreciated by the winners and many competitors enjoyed the massage provided by therapists from Eye-Bex Sports Therapy.
