This Mum Runs is the simple title that masks the huge physical and emotional commitment behind the winner of the national Women's Sport Trust #BeAGameChanger Award 2017. The running programme, started by busy mum of two Mel Bound in Bristol in November 2014, has been voted 'Inspiring Initiative – Local' at a glittering ceremony in London's Troxy last Thursday (11 May).
This Mum Runs Away With National Award
The compelling story behind the community of 10,000 active running mums saw This Mum Runs reach the shortlist that went to a public vote. Mel put out a plea for a running buddy on Facebook as she needed the company and motivation. When 75 mums turned up for the first official running session, This Mum Runs was up and running.
This Mum Runs now provide 200 free runs a month from 17 locations across Bristol and Bath and is about to launch in London. The programmes are led by mums trained as running coaches (Run Makers) and volunteers (Run Angels) and runs are held at times that fit around the family, making them accessible to as many women as possible.
On receiving the award Mel Bound (pictured) immediately paid tribute to her wonderful Run Makers and Run Angels: “This is an award that celebrates the efforts of an entire community; our Run Angels who volunteer their time every week to lead our 200+ free runs; our Run Makers - mums we've trained as running coaches who have inspired thousands of women at the start of their running journey and every single mum who gets out the door to run with us every week and provides support and encouragement to others too”.
Warming to her theme, Mel added: “We're on a mission to remove the practical and emotional barriers to regular exercise for thousands of women, to empower women to be happier and healthier. So we are absolutely over the moon to receive this recognition and hope it inspires women around the country to join us”.
