2020 will be the 37th year of Hendy Tunbridge Wells Half Marathon which has grown from humble beginnings with about 50 runners to today when entries reach up to 2000 (over 2000 when the race celebrated its 30th anniversary).
The event (Sunday 16 February) is still organised voluntarily by members of Tunbridge Wells Harriers, as well as a race it is also a charity event with any surplus being donated to local charities and good causes.
This is an event organised by runners for runners and one of the few major road races still taking this approach. It remains one of the biggest events in the UK organised by a running club and Tunbridge Wells Harriers are very proud to have hosted the event for the past 36 years. The club welcomes runners of all abilities (although there is a 3 hour cut-off because of traffic concerns).
The course is famed for its scenic and challenging route which includes the 300 foot ascent of Spring Hill at Fordcombe, meticulous organisation, value for money, pacer groups and friendly marshals.
It was voted the ‘Most Improved Race in the UK’ in 2009 and No.2 Half Marathon in the UK in 2011 by Runner’s World readers. In 2019 in the 'Lets Do This' Challenge Awards it was voted the fifth Best Half Marathon in the South of England.
For 2020 Tunbridge Wells Harriers are hugely grateful to the sponsorship and support from local partners and particularly to Hendy, title sponsors again in 2020.
Over the years the race has also donated a considerable amount to charity and worthy local causes directly from race surplus which is boosted by the sponsorship. The race also donates free places to selected charities.
This coming year race organisers are supporting the Pickering Centre as the main charity, with The Bridge Trust and Tunbridge Wells Counselling Centre. Any donations given with your entry will be shared between the three headline charities.
With the entry fee (£28), competitors will receive a technical fabric long running T-shirt, a bespoke medal, accurate chip timing, secure baggage facilities and entry admin fees. TW Harriers hope to welcome you and guide you round the course in February 2020.
