The Vitality Westminster Mile takes place on Sunday, May 29 on possibly the most iconic course in the world, starting on The Mall and finishing in front of Buckingham Palace, with the assembly area in Green Park. The series of seeded races are organised by London Marathon Events Limited, in partnership with Westminster City Council, with categories for all ages and abilities.
The parkrun community has been invited to take part in their very own wave. Places in the parkrun wave are strictly limited to 450, so parkrunners who want to test their mile pace are encouraged to sign up to join the group on The Mall.
Activities on offer in Green Park include live music on the Soul Stage, injury prevention workshops at the Body Zone and yoga, pilates and tai chi at the Mind Zone. Children (and adults) can enjoy the arts and crafts in the Big Top or explore the nature trail at the Play Park.
The Vitality Westminster Mile was launched in 2013 with 2,000 competitors as a legacy event from the 2012 Olympic Games. Entries have risen to 4,000 in 2014 and nearly 5,000 last year, with David Weir setting world wheelchair records of 3:07 and 3:03 in the last two events.
Britain made its indelible mark in history at the distance in 1954 when Sir Roger Bannister ran the first sub-four-minute mile, followed a few weeks later by Diane Leather becoming the first woman to go under the five-minute barrier. The current holders of the Sir Roger Bannister trophy and Diane Leather trophy, awarded to the winners of the men’s and women’s elite mile, are Adam Clarke (Aldershot, 4:05) and Rachael Bamford (Leeds, 4:39) and the course records are held by Charlie Grice (Brighton, 4:02) and Hannah England (Oxford, 4:31).
Online entry is open and costs just £8 for adults and £6 for juniors. Children under nine are free. Entries close on Friday, May 6 or when 10,000 entries are received. So enter now and go for your personal best and then enjoy watching the elite try to emulate the feats of Bannister and Leather some 62 years ago.
