Who on earth would sign up for an event called The Hurt? Anyone who fancies a challenging but rewarding 5k, 10.5k or 21k trail run through the enchanted forest of the Greensand Ridge in the Surrey Hills – known as The Hurt Wood, hence the name of this popular race.
The Hurt, promoted by the experienced AAT Events team, takes place on Saturday (3 June). This entirely off-road run offers magnificent views as you race through the Alpine-like scenery, known locally as 'Little Switzerland'. The courses are tough – even the medium distance has more than 1,000 feet of ascent – but any Canicross competitors can take advantage of four feet drive assistance!
Further south, the beautiful Isle of Wight hosts its annual Festival of Running, with the Needles 5k/10k on Saturday and the Needles XC Marathon/Half Marathon on Sunday. The weekend will feature a special screening of the classic film Chariots of Fire and a race distance to suit all standards. Experienced athletes looking for an event to push themselves to the limit will be unable to resist the full marathon, with glimpses of the famous Needles and the many ups and downs of the Tennyson Trail.
Elsewhere, the distance of choice this weekend seems to be the ubiquitous 10k, with races at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and Richmond Park, London on Saturday and Regent's Park; Worthing; Gillingham; Wallingford; Cosham; Crewkerne; Poole and Fairford on Sunday.
As always, full details of these and other races are on our comprehensive runABC race listings, brought to you in association with Sports Tours International.
