Stampede at Colchester Half or enjoy zoo time at Regent's Park Run

Colchester Stampede competitor

Personal bests will be falling like the early leaves of autumn this weekend as the September fixture list picks up the pace, with around 50 events on runABC South race listing. We highlight some last minute chances to compete where entries may be available on the day – but always check with the organisers first.

Our suggestion for Saturday (8 September) is the BHF Regent's Park Run in London where you can sign up for £25 (£12 for children U18) to run 5K or 10K to help British Heart Foundation to 'beat heartbreak forever'. All entrants will receive an exclusive Regent's Park Run technical T-shirt, chip timing, medal and free event photo.

Regent's Park Run route is mainly flat on tarmac paths and the park is also home to the world famous London Zoo. The proximity of the course will enable you to catch a glimpse of some of the exotic species that call this special place home. Simply head for the Espresso Bar situated on Cumberland Green (marked on all the 'You Are Here' maps).

The Great North Run in Newcastle will occupy many runners on Sunday but if you are not competing and can tear yourself away from the live broadcast on BBC there are a number of options for your own version in the South of England.

Continuing our zoological theme we can suggest the first ever Colchester Stampede Half Marathon that starts and finishes inside Colchester Zoo, home to over 260 species in 60 acres of parkland and lakes. The event supports the charity Action for the Wild and entries will include free Zoo entry, themed medal, finishers T-shirt, chip timing and goody bag. There is a 2,000 race limit and we would recommend entering online before travelling.

Finally there is a fast, gently undulating multi-terrain course on quiet country lanes and traffic free cycle paths at the 30th annual Harlow 10 on Sunday. Organised by local Harlow Running Club members, supporting Chocolate Run and Kayleigh's Trust charities, there is a twist to the traditional medal as the top 50 receive gold, the next 50 get silver and there is bronze for everyone else. Entries cost £17/£19 plus £1 extra on the day.
