Wild Weekend Expected In The South

Dartmoor National Park

Release your inner animal in the south this weekend as there are some beastly events planned. Both domesticated and wild creatures feature in some unusual race names spotted around the region.

Dartmoor National Park provides the spectacular setting for Something Wild Trail Running Festival 2017. Wildlife is bound to be a feature during the event which includes the Summit Wild Ultra 32-mile trail race (with 1,381m ascent) and the Something Wild Trail Marathon/Half Marathon on Saturday (9 September), and the Something Wild Trail 10K/5K and Kid's Races 2K/1K on Sunday. Race HQ and campsite is Huccaby Farm, Yelverton, where the neighbours include 100 head of cattle.

Talking of cattle brings us to Corfe Castle, Wareham and the comically named Bad Cow Frolic. Burnbake Campsite is the base for this 12-hour race with a bovine-themed medal. The race is held on a woodland-lapped course and can be run solo or in teams of up to four members. The changeover area is next to the bar so a good atmosphere is ensured. Bad Cow Frolic is followed by a more conventional marathon and half marathon on Sunday for individuals.

Furry best friends are catered for at K9 Challenge in Brighton's beautiful Stanmer Park on Sunday. This is a doggy powered 5k run/walk on a two-lap woodland circuit with T-shirt and medal for owners and collar tag and treats for your pooch and someone will have the honour of being the first ever winner of Brighton K9 Challenge. You would be barking not to enter!

Finally, look out for the ponies in the New Forest Marathon/Half Marathon/10K/5K on Sunday. The comprehensive events programme also includes a junior 1k and 200m dash and Nordic Walking in a stunning setting based at New Park Farm Show Ground, Brockenhurst in the heart of New Forest National Park. Other attractions include live bands, massage, food and beverage, technical traders, shuttle bus and onsite camping.

Looks like it's time to get down with nature while enjoying your favourite activity this weekend. Let's hope the weather holds.

As always the full event details and results are available at runABC South race listings.
