This weekend we look at some of the more unusual races in the runABC South race listings, ranging from the 24-hour Spitfire Scramble at Hornchurch to a scramble to Beat the Tide at Worthing...
Spitfire Scramble is London's only 24-hour off-road relay race. The race HQ is in Hornchurch Country Park, situated on the former site of a crucial airfield in both World Wars. During the Battle of Britain countless Spitfire missions were launched from here. There are distant views to the Shard and Canary Wharf from the highest point of the 5.8-mile lap, which solo runners, pairs or teams of up to eight will run continuously from noon on Saturday (14 July).
Perhaps the antithesis of 24-hour endurance racing is Sussex Trail Event's Beat the Tide 10K race on the foreshore at Coast Cafe, Beach Parade, Worthing on Sunday morning. Here the imperative will be the advancing tide and the start time has been amended to 6:45pm to take into account the gravitational forces exerted by the Sun and the Moon and the rotation of the Earth. Harriers will have to become hurriers unless they are happy to get their trainers wet!
Other events with a difference include The Farm Run 5K – a brand new obstacle course race on Hammonds End Farm, Harpenden, with an extreme hill option at the end of a challenging route, with tasks designed to test your limits set by a former Marine. As well as having a bucket load of fun, you will be helping to raise funds for Rennie Grove Hospice Care.
Of course, there are plenty of more conventional events this weekend, with around 40 races in runABC South's
comprehensive race listing, brought to you in association with Sports Tours International.
Whether you plan to run for 24-hours or 24-minutes this weekend, runABC South
wishes you a safe and enjoyable time and we invite you to check out all the results as they appear in our race listing here.
