There's no getting away from it – ten kilometres is the event of choice for runners this weekend. There are at least a dozen races at the popular and manageable distance at venues in the south including Axminster, Bedford, Caterham, Deal, Elmbridge... you get the picture!
We begin our alphabetical preview of some of the best 10k races around with Axminster, where the Dalwood Fayre 10K-ish takes place on Sunday (23 July). Axe Valley Runners, who promote the famous Grizzly Run in Devon, are helping organise this approximately 10k race on fields, tracks and roads around Dalwood. Do not expect goody bags or medals at this no frills event as all such fripperies are stripped away to keep entry fees low.
Meanwhile, the Bedfordshire AAA 10K on Friday night (21 July) will be a much more serious affair as good club athletes will be going head to head on the Willington Cycle Track loop from Bedford International Athletics Stadium. The course is flat, fast and through attractive scenery.
Redhill Aerodrome is the venue for Caterham Rotary Half Marathon and 10K on Sunday. We did cheat a bit by including a supporting race but the quiet country lanes around the former RAF airfield should give the opportunity for some fast times in either event.
Deal Dinosaur 10K is named after one of the host club founders, Roger Francis-Darby, who described himself as an old dinosaur throughout his running years. Race HQ is at Walmer Sea Scout Hut and the mainly flat, seafront course can produce fast times if the wind is kind.
Elmbridge 10K is a hugely popular, traditional race that is fully sold out with no entries on the day. Part of the attraction is the superb out-and-back course alongside River Thames towards Hampton Court. Last year's winners were Phil Wicks (Belgrave Harriers, 30:38) and his wife Emily Wicks (Aldershot, Farnham & District, 35:05) and there were 584 finishers in 1:30:17.
And of course, 'F' is for fun and runABC South wishes all competitors, supporters and officials a fun time racing throughout the nation from Abbotts Langley to Zouch and beyond.
