The marquee event in the south of England this weekend – and they do have an actual marquee to prove it – is the Run Reigate Half Marathon. Double Olympic gold medallist, Dame Kelly Holmes, will be on hand to start the adults and kids races in Priory Park on Sunday morning (18 September).
This will be the third edition of this hugely successful event and minor adjustments have been made to the half marathon course to iron out some lumpy bits and improve the general race experience. The Reigate programme includes a 10k option and the popular Canon Kids Races to keep the youngsters occupied.
Half marathon seems to be the distance of choice as final preparations are made for those seeking an autumn marathon at home or abroad. Sunday is the busiest day with 13.1 mile challenges on offer at Ashford, Ipswich, Richmond, Royston, Truro and Wickham (on the Meon Valley Trail disused railway).
Some will be heading to wonderful Copenhagen on Sunday for their half marathon fix, with Sports Tours International leading an organised trip. There is nothing quite like the atmosphere of a race abroad to get the adrenalin flowing, of course.
A further stepping stone is on offer at The Downs, Swanage, where runners can choose the spectacular, multi-terrain Purbeck 16 or the Purbeck Marathon.
All the races and results are featured in the comprehensive runABC South race listings.
Details of overseas trips are available at Sports Tours International.
