The fourth official running of the Moyleman marathon takes place on Sunday 18 March 2018. After a test run in 2014, the first run was held in 2015 with just under 100 runners, and the second in 2016 attracted nearly 200 and the third in 2017 nearly 300.
The event is a challenging South Downs run, around the beautiful and demanding hills that surround the town of Lewes. Named in remembrance of the Brighton runner Chris Moyle who inspired many with his love of tough downland runs and the joy of life, and who died aged just 41 in 2009.
Starting from Landport Bottom on the western end of Lewes, the run takes in the peaks of Black Cap, Castle Hill, Firle Beacon, and Mt Caburn. It may be unique in allowing runners to see the entire course at these high points as they progress around the route.
With over 3,000 feet of climb, and some steep descents, this is a hard run for relatively experienced runners. That said, for some this has been their first marathon distance, so it can be done.
The record was set in 2015 at a barely believable 3 hours - by local runner Mike Ellicock who went on that year to set the world record for running a marathon carrying a 20lb pack. We are asking for runners who can complete the race within around 5 and a half hours.
The run finishes fittingly for a Lewes run in Harveys Brewery Yard - and for all runners there is a celebratory pint, donated by the brewery. Plus food from Circa, and massages for tired legs.
You will have the support of a great band of local marshals, but care and an ability to follow marker posts will be needed. We have lead bikes and tail bikes to shepherd the leaders and the final finishers.
We see this as a run for those who love running, love the downland landscape and want to experience all that the hills can throw at them. And throw it back with passion.
In March the weather can be anything from snow to glorious hot sunshine - and wind anything from a gentle breeze to a sharp blast from the seas.
We also offer a relay option for a team of two people - with the halfway point at Southease YHA and railway station. The cost of that is £50 for the pair.
Entries this year are limited to 250 individuals and 50 relay teams of two. So get booking!
