Excitement is building in the harbour town of Folkestone in Kent with less than a month to go before the seafront promenade becomes the race route for the Folkestone Coastal 10K on Sunday 28 May. Race director and keen local Rotarian Ray Johnson is effectively entering the finishing straight with his preparations now he has recovered from his exertions in the Virgin Money London Marathon.
Flat, Fast, Friendly Folkestone Coastal 10k
This will be the sixth annual Folkestone Coastal 10K and, with charity at the heart of the event, organisers are proud to announce that more than £200,000 has been raised for local causes including Rotary Club of Folkestone and Gurkha Memorial Fund.
Last year's winners were Robert Latala (Ashford Roadrunners, 33:09) and former Australian Olympian Natalie Harvey (South London Harriers, 37:31). 375 broke the hour and 525 finished. Despite excellent conditions the course records held by Paul Whittaker (Southend, 32:08) and Maria Heslop (Paddock Wood, 36:49) survived.
After the 2016 race, Ray Johnson said: “I’m delighted that there was a terrific turnout for this year’s race, with over 650 entrants and good support along the whole course, with the crowds and marshals creating a great atmosphere. Unlike 2015, we enjoyed fair weather conditions for our fifth Folkestone Coastal 10K. The children’s race was well attended with great enthusiasm from these budding athletes of the future.”
Race features include finishers' medals, spot prizes, enthusiastic marshals and £100 winners' awards and entry fees are as low as £14 before 18 May (£20 thereafter). There is a children's race for under-15s held half an hour before the main event, with entries taken on the day.
Improvements this year include a new start and race registration set at the eastern end of the Coastal Park, near the bottom of Leas Cliff Lift. The main race starts at 10:00am and runABC South will be represented by your reporter Alan Newman, who invites you to join him at (possibly) Kent's flattest, fastest, friendliest and most charitable 10k road race.
The entry limit is 1,000. Details are available at the Folkestone Coastal 10K website or via the runABC South race listings page.
